Terms of service

What this is

Shelf Portrait (shelfportrait.com) is a service for keeping a virtual bookshelf: tracking what you read, showing it off on a public profile if you choose to, and generating shareable recap images. By creating an account or using the site, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, don’t use the service.

Your account

You need to be at least 16 years old (or the minimum age for consenting to data processing in your country) to use Shelf Portrait. Keep your login credentials to yourself; you’re responsible for activity that happens under your account. One person per account, and don’t impersonate anyone else with your username or display name.

Your content

Your shelf, ratings, bio, avatar, and any covers you pick stay yours. By posting them, you give us the license we need to actually run the service: storing your content, displaying it on your profile (publicly, if your profile is public), computing your stats, and rendering the share images you ask for. If you generate a share link, the resulting image is publicly reachable by anyone with the link until your account is deleted.

Some things you contribute improve the shared catalogue for everyone: a cover you pick for a book that has none, a genre suggestion, or a page count. Those contributions stay in the catalogue even if you later delete your account, because other people’s shelves rely on them; they contain nothing that identifies you.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • upload content that’s illegal, hateful, sexually explicit, or that you don’t have the right to share (this includes avatars and share images);
  • vandalise the shared catalogue (deliberately wrong covers, genres, or metadata);
  • scrape, spam, probe, or overload the service, or try to access other people’s private data;
  • use the service to harass anyone or misrepresent who you are;
  • resell or white-label the service without our permission.

We can remove content or suspend accounts that break these rules. We’ll be proportionate about it: an honest mistake gets a conversation, abuse gets removed.

Book data

Book metadata and covers come from Google Books, Open Library, and community contributions. We don’t guarantee their accuracy, and the rights to cover artwork remain with their respective publishers and creators. If you hold rights to an image shown here and want it removed, contact us (below) and we’ll take it down.

The service itself

Shelf Portrait is currently free. We may add paid features later; anything you can do for free today, we’ll try to keep free, but we don’t promise the service will stay unchanged forever. We may modify or discontinue features (or the whole service) at any time. If we ever shut down entirely, we’ll give you reasonable notice and a way to export your data first.

The service is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent the law allows, we’re not liable for indirect or consequential damages, lost data, or lost profits arising from your use of the service. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t legally be limited.

Leaving

You can delete your account at any time from Settings; deletion is immediate and permanent, and covers your profile, shelf, and reading history (see the privacy policy for details). We can terminate accounts that violate these terms.

Changes to these terms

If we make material changes, we’ll update the date at the top and, for significant changes, tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the new terms.

Governing law & contact
